A Letter to “The People”

I have lived in Dutchess County all my life. I am a carpenter. I have worked in the building trades since I was 17 years old. My wife’s name is Tracy. She is an R.N. and we are coming up on our 23rd anniversary this year.  We have three children, two boys Dana Jr. and Zachary and one girl Zipporah.  We have a 155 lb. Golden Retriever  named Samson and a cat named Felix. I was born in Poughkeepsie to an Italian mother (Versace) and an Irish/Dutch father. I have seven brothers and sisters all living in Dutchess County. As a child, My brothers and sisters and I were very close. We didn’t have much, but we had each other. My father worked two jobs while my mother stayed at home and cared for us.

I am not running for NYS Assembly because  I want a career in politics. I am not running to be in the spot light or for power. I am running for the working families because I have seen what has happened over the past seven plus years around our region and across the United states. If you want the “Truth”, then here it is. I have seen what happens when “The People” don’t get involved in politics. You vote does matter. Along with you, I have witnessed our manufacturing base being shipped to countries with low wage workers, low environmental standards, and no worker rights, for higher corporate profits with no regard to the American worker.

I have seen the influence of corporate lobbyist’s, deregulation, and our unfair, so called, “Free Trade” agreements ruin lives. Deregulation has allowed corporations to pollute more causing cancer and other ailments. Deregulation and Free Trade has given the American People unsafe products from China, higher health care costs dictated by the insurance and drug companies, higher food prices, higher land and school taxes, higher prices on gasoline, heating oil, and prescription drugs while giving corporations record profits.

Consolidation of our Media is one of the most disturbing elements of Deregulation that we face as a nation. A handful of corporations now control the majority of all the Media in the United States. This gives them the power to control what we see and hear. What they want is what they tell us is good for us.

Corporations don’t want to loose control of our Health Care System, so they tell us that if we move toward universal heath care we will get poor quality care, we won’t be able to choose our doctors, and we will have a long wait time for a simple procedure. All false. People all around the world who have Universal Health Care say that it’s great. First of all, we are the only industrialized nation without universal health care because we are the only nation where the media has total control of what we think about it. My second point; if there are things that we don’t like about it, we can keep what we like and change the things we don’t. I think the American people are creative enough to do that. Don’t you? We now pay more than double of other countries for health care and get the same quality. The Republicans in congress have stopped the Democrats from passing legislation which would have allowed negotiations with drug companies for lower drug prices.

What we have now is a system controlled by the insurance and the drug companies. The insurance companies not only dictate the prices we pay, but they also dictate the care we receive.  The drug companies dictate the drugs we use by pushing doctors into recommending them. The Republicans in congress along with President Bush has allowed the insurance and drug companies to do whatever they have wanted over the past seven plus years.

In 2006,  the Democrats took a 1 vote majority in the Senate and a clear majority in the House. Even so, the Republicans have found ways to obstruct the Democrats from doing the peoples business. The Republicans have passed legislation to benefit their corporate buddies, and the People be damned. During the last seven plus years, the Republicans have controlled the Govt. and have stopped the Democrats from holding any kind of oversight hearings. Now that the Democrats have taken control, there are finally ethics and corruption hearings being held by the Democrats on Capital Hill, and the tip of the “Republican Corruption Iceberg” is finally beginning to rear it’s ugly head. This is only the beginning of this story.

For years, the Republican Elite in Washington has counted on the working people staying home on election day. The bottom line is, “If you don’t vote, you will not be represented.” The wealthy always vote!
